Harwood Flooring Styles:

Hardwood presents the opportunity to introduce a personal style to your home. With well over 20 species of woods available today, each offering unique color, strength, and grain. Hardwood flooring manufacturers offer a few different options that will affect the overall look of your floor:

Strip
–Strip hardwood flooring is restricted to widths of 1 ½", 2", and 2 ¼". This type of flooring creates a very linear appearance and creates the impression of length in smaller spaces.
Plank–Plank hardwood flooring is available in widths from 3" to 8". This style also creates a linear appearance but is generally wider than strip flooring.
Parquet–Parquet hardwood flooring is right back in style again resembling various geometric patterns and or arrangements made from individual wood pieces.
Hand-Scrapped–Hand-scrapped hardwood flooring gives the flooring a ribbed scalloped finish rather than smooth. This style helps in disguising damage. It also makes for a more rustic appearance.
Unfinished–Unfinished hardwood floors are in a natural state where the floor has not been stain and finished. Here you have more control over the desired look you want to accomplish.
Pre-finished–Pre-finished hardwood floors have already been entirely sanded, stained, and finished, making for a quicker start to finished installation. Pre-finished floors account for over half of the market today.

Durability:

Scratch Resistance–Hardwood flooring is susceptible to scratching, denting, and gouging. Although certain species are harder than others, wood is still a soft product.
Strength–Strength is important when choosing a hardwood floor for your home. The Janka table represents the strength variations of hardwood species. Refer to this list when choosing a species for your floor and lifestyle.
Water Resistance–The finishes used on hardwood flooring today are quite tolerant of water, traffic, and staining. However, like all natural flooring products, if liquid left standing for an extended period can lead to your floor cupping, bowing, warping, and/or cracking. Consider using rugs or mats in potentially wet areas such as kitchens, baths, and entries to prevent any related damage.
